His Culious Epiphany

HCE are the initials of the dreamer Humphry Chimpdon Earwicker. In the context of the dream, however, HCE is a sort of everyman and becomes "Here Comes Everybody". HCE is in the first line identified with Howth hill in "Howth Castle and Environs". The Archetypal father figure He is Shan (Chinese for mountain) and Shin (Hebrew letter meaning "tooth, and 300 by enumeration, also signifying the descent of spirit into matter) on the level of W or the collective unconcious. His Culious Epiphany shows the dreamers guilt on the Freudian level of the dream (M). On the non-local level (3), HCE is present equally in all things in the Wake, as it is his dream.
