I love books!

Back from the bookstore, and grocery shopping, and office depot. Bought Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson by G.I. Gurdjieff. I have plenty of reading already to keep me busy, but I had a 30% off coupon that expired today, and saved myself $10. woohoo.

Beginning to delve more deeply into FW starting with Jarl Van Hoother and the Prankquean (P21-23). The story is essentially that of Grace O'Malley, The Privateer Paid by the British Crown to prey upon Spanish Shipping and Her coming to Howth castle to ask for the Celtic tradition of hospitality. The Norman Lord who resided therein, had no use for any such Celtic traditions, and slammed the door in her face. O'Malley kidnaps the son of the Lord of the castle and as ransom demands that the door of Howth castle be open every night at dinner time. This story forms the underpinnings for the Van Hoother/prankquean Fairy tale which begins:

it was of a night, late lang time agone (Once upon a time, long ago)

and ends:

And they all drank free. (and they all had tea).

At this point I should probably introduce the system of abreviations I'll be using. I got this system from the expanded version of the article "Synchronicity and Isomorphism in Finnegans Wake" by Robert Anton Wilson in his book "Coincidance". These shorthand symbols are from Joyce's notebooks. The fonts available to me on the blog page will not exactly reproduce these symbols as the appear in the "Synchronicity" article, but I'll try to keep it as clear as possible. The first 4 symbols are part of a larger system function represented by 4 capital letter E's arranged like this. I will substitute for the constituant parts the following:

E The ego or waking self of the dreamer. Humphrey Chimpdon Earwicker.
M The Freudian unconcious level of the dream.
W The Jungian Collective unconcious.
3 The non-local in Quantum Physics, Wu Win or "no mind" in Buddhism.

The next is:
^ or Delta is ALP or Anna Livia Plurabelle. Yin to HCE's Yang, she is the waking ego's wife Anne, and the River Anna Liffey.
C, A Cain and Abel, also Shem and Sean, they are the twin sons of ALP and HCE.
A= The reconciliation of this pair of warring opposites, and the third member of a trinity (with C, and A) which represents the 3 soldiers in the park. A= By itself is also the cad in the park.
] and [ are the 2 Isoldes of Celtic legend Isolde the Fair, and Isolde of the white hands. Also the 2 Alices of Lewis Carrol.
][ Is the reconciliation of these opposites (much like A=) and represents HCE's daughter.

That should be enough to start off with.

Next: Diagrams!
