Juan, Juan, Juan.

ALP (^) is the spelling out of the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet; Aleph. Traditionally this represents God in the hebrew tradition (and the christian as in "I am the alpha and omega": Revelations 1:11). Aleph is associated with beginnings and means "ox". The numerical value of the letter Aleph is 1 implying unity, but the name of the letter spelled out in hebrew is ALP which adds up to 111. Joyce uses ALP as the symbol for the feminine principle as Anna Livia Plurabelle. Wilson writes:

"Anna Livia Plurabelle's untitled "mamafesta" in Chapter Five has 111 alternative titles; when sad, she is described as "wan wan wan"; in chapter 8 she has 111 children."

The symbol I am using here is ^ but Joyces symbol was the greek letter delta which looks like a triangle. Triangles are often used as symbols of the vagina, and Joyce frequently transmutes ALP to LAP which also puns on vagina (according to Hamlet). Joyce also transmutes ALP to APL which brings us to the apple in the garden of Eden, and links Anna Livia to Eve and Eris.
